$500,000 COMMITMENT ANNOUNCED

The Mosaic Company announced a $500,000 commitment over two years to support building a new Recovery & Wellness Centre on Ochapowace Nation. The project will be built south of Broadview and once opened will provide an additional 20 treatment beds for the province.

“The opioid crisis is one of the toughest challenges we’ve faced. It is a pandemic that is not only impacting youth, but people of all ages. This project is a sign of hope,” says Ochapowace Nation Chief Shelley A. Bear.

Ochapowace Nation is responsible for raising the capital funds to build the centre that is estimated to cost $6 million. Funds from the Government of Saskatchewan will come once the facility is fully constructed as part of their Action Plan for Mental Health & Addictions that has committed to adding 500 treatment spaces in the province. The goal is to begin construction on the Recovery & Wellness Centre this spring.

“Our government is adding 500 additional treatment spaces over the next five years – because we are focused on a recovery-oriented approach. The new Ochapowace Nation Recovery & Wellness Centre will enable people taking those critical steps towards recovery a way to seek help closer to home”, says MLA for Moosomin-Montmarte, Kevin Weedmark on behalf of Lori Carr, Minister of Mental Health and Addictions

“For 20 years, Mosaic has demonstrated its commitment to Saskatchewan by making generational investments in potash production and contributing to the vitality of its people, economy, and environment. Over the last decade, we have pursued opportunities for greater learning and engagement with the First Nations that neighbour our operating areas, and I’m proud that this relationship helps the province thrive,” says Mosaic President and CEO, Bruce Bodine. “It is truly an honour to support this important project alongside Ochapowace Nation and Chief Bear.”

Ochapowace Nation Recovery & Wellness Centre

The Ochapowace Nêhiyawêwin Land-Based Recovery & Wellness Centre is a transformative healing space designed to support individuals on their journey to overcome addiction. It is grounded in traditional Ochapowace Nêhiyawêwin teachings, cultural practices, and a strong connection to the land.

Fostering resilience and community support, the Centre offers a holistic approach to recovery that emphasizes physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual well-being. Its programs integrate land-based activities such as hunting, fishing, gathering, and storytelling, providing participants with opportunities to reconnect with their culture and environment.

By focusing on Nêhiyawêwin values of respect, healing, and empowerment, the Centre promotes long-term wellness and a sustainable path to recovery. It encourages individuals to rediscover their strength, purpose, and identity in a culturally safe and nurturing environment.

Action Plan for Mental Health & Addictions

In April 2024, the province announced its Action Plan for Mental Health and Addictions, which included the addition of 500 addictions treatment spaces across Saskatchewan. The 20-bed centre supported by Ochapowace Nation will be open to anyone in the province and will support the government’s commitment to open 500 treatment spaces.
